Wind is the horizontal movement of air. Wind is caused by the uneven heating of the earth’s surface by the sun. Water surfaces and areas under clouds heat less quickly; land surfaces exposed to bright sunlight heat more quickly. The air above hot surfaces is heated and rises, creating a low pressure area. Air, from surrounding higher pressure areas, flows toward the low pressure area, creating wind.
A wind turbine harnesses kinetic energy from wind and converts it to electricity through the rotation of blades connected to a generator. Wind turbines come in a number of sizes and configurations depending on their use. They range in size from small units producing 400 watts to large industrial turbines 117 metres tall, weighing 63 tonnes, and supplying enough electricity for 3000 homes.
The Canadian Wind Energy Association (CANWEA) estimates that there are over 3000 mega watts (MW) of commercially viable wind energy in Ontario. Currently less than 1/10 of 1% of Canada’s energy is generated from wind, even though Ontario and other provinces have an abundance of wind.
Eco Alternative Energy carries wind generators up to 10000 watts and will provide the solution to your wind energy needs. If you are off-grid and want a Solar-Wind Hybrid system to power your home or you are connected to hydro and require a grid connected system, we have systems available, with or without batteries, or, we will custom design a system to suit your individual needs.
